Soul Food, Food Festivals To Feed Your Soul

Who doesn’t love food that fuels your pride and heritage—the warm sauces, savory sides, perfectly seasoned meats and desserts to bless your soul. All of which, are justified by the hype and often imitated, but never duplicated recipes. Scheduled this hibernation season and beyond, there are festivals and event options for the most discerning, soul food, foodie.

November 12, 2016

Lisa Davis, Miami Gardens Councilwoman has ushered in a truly soul-filling event. I mean, Marcus Samuelsson? G. Garvin? AND hosted by Lamman Rucker? Here’s hoping Calder Casino can handle all of that!

You need to know, Ms. Davis had Omari Hardwick on the inaugural ticket last year. So, yes, we’re out here with bated breaths, looking for 2018’s lineup.

Afrikin Fest: http://www.afrikinfest.com
November 18-20, 2016

Miami will play host to a soulful celebration, like no other. The complete fête of history, culture and world music will also feature eats from the likes of Chefs Carl Redding (Amy Ruth’s) and Ron Duprat (Top Chef, Season 6), to name a few.

As if grubbing and honoring aren’t enough, proceeds from the festival will benefit Hurricane Matthew relief efforts to Haiti and Give Me Dignity, an organization that raises awareness about Childhood Sexual Abuse (CSA).

February 23—26, 2017

Celebrate Black History Month with eats and wine and sf|noir—a non-profit organization, celebrating 15 years in brining uniquely, Black art forms to the Bay Area. If the Wine & Food Festival is at all similar to sfnoir’s Food From Across Africa event, here’s hoping it becomes a yearly affair!

Black Cuisine Festival a.k.a. Bayview Soul Food Festival: https://bhpmss.org/black-cuisine/
Spring (March) 2017

The Bayview Soul Food Festival must be one of the longest-running, food festivals in the Nation! Benefiting the Bayview Senior Center, the meals, music and kid’s activities are warm and welcoming. With free admission and dishes prepared by volunteers from the area, it’s understandable why this one is a favorite.

April 29 & 30, 2017

You can’t have my cornbread! In this case, you needn’t share, as there’s plenty for everyone at South Pittsburgh, TN’s National Cornbread Festival. With everything cornbread—from a Cast Iron Cornbread Cook-off to a Cornbread 5K Race (so appropriate), for sure there’s something for every cornbread’er.
